The goals of this commission are to increase public awareness and appreciation of Monterey Park’s history and heritage, to preserve memorabilia and records pertaining to Monterey Park’s past, and advise the City Council on all matters pertaining to the City’s history and heritage.
Past and current activities of this commission have included recording the oral history and perspectives of community members, the achievement of designating El Encanto and the Cascades as a State recognized historical resource, pursuit of grant funding and encouragement of rehabilitating the Cascades, and participation on the City’s Tree Memorial Committee. The Commission also works closely with the Monterey Park Historical Society, which operates and maintains the Monterey Park Historical Museum located at Garvey Ranch Park, 781 S. Orange Avenue, (626) 307-1267. One of the Commissions' most recent major projects was "Monterey Park...Then and Now" a booklet designed for the City's 85th Anniversary; the booklet shows the development of Monterey Park through the decades. This visual presentation is now available here. Another event the Commission is involved with is the annual "Howlin, Hairy, Halloween Home Decorating Contest" - click here to see the top decorated houses for 2007.
